Check-Raising In Poker

Article written by Bryan Nelson

No matter if your favourite poker game is Texas Holdem, Omaha, Seven Card Stud, Five Card Stud, or any other poker game, the most important Poker Rules and Poker Strategies are common for all types of poker games. This also applies to some of the deceiving actions a poker player can perform during his game, actions such as Bluffing, Semi-Bluffing, Slow Play, etc. One of these moves is the so called Check-Raise action.

When you are dealt a decent poker hand, in which hand you are sure that it can even beat the hands of the other players, you have the option to Check-Raise the other gamblers, that hand of yours might earn you a lot of money. Check-Raising is used to deceive your opponents in the beginning of the hand, to delude them that you have a weak hand, with which you want to see the flop without putting much money on the pot, that is why you check at first. You just hope that some other player will open the betting round, by betting the pot in an attempt to steal it.

After a gambler at your table bets the pot, if the others want to continue their game in the current hand, at least they have to match this bet. For you it will be great if as many players as possible match the previous bet. In this case when the betting comes again to you, you can raise the previous bet, forcing the players who are not confident in their hands to fold them. But they have already put enough money in the pot, so your Check-Raising is very reasonable at this moment.

If, for example, one or two players do not want to fold, then the game will proceed as usual, giving you the chance to get some more money in the pot, before earning it all with your strong hand.

Just because of the above, you can clearly see that Check-Raising is a great tool for extracting more money in the pot, before win it with your decent hand.

But this is not all one can say about the Check-Raise. According to poker legend Doyle Brunson, by check-raising you can give your poker opponents the opportunity to see the Flop, where they hand can improve, and that will be bad for your game. Also, Brunson thinks that Check-Raising can make it clear for the others that you obviously have a very strong hand. But the last means that Check-Raising can be used as a very strong bluff technique.

Another advantage of the Check-Raising move is that you can gather very useful information with it. After you have checked, and then raised, if your opponents still call, at least you have obtained information regarding how strong their hands are and forced them to pay as much as possible for trying to outdraw you.
