Two WSOP Winner’s History

Article written by Randy G.
Sunday, June 01, 2008

Here are some of the most entertaining tidbits about two WSOP champions.

Johnny Moss was one of the greats but he hated cheaters and players used to use holdout machines. The only sure way to know was to undress, so Johnny would point a pistol at your head and demand you undress. One day, he was asked if he had ever killed anyone and he replied “I don’t know if he died.”

Johnny went to a small town to play and realized that the room had been set up with a peep hole in the ceiling. He told them he hated cheaters and showed them his gun. He said “Now fellas, do I have to go and shoot a bullet in the ceiling? Or you going to send your boy down without any harm?” They didn’t believe him and the guy in the ceiling got shot in his ass.

Stu Ungar was addicted to gambling and never really cared about the money. When he won the 1981 WSOP, he was asked “What will you do with all the money for first prize?” and he replied “Lose it!”

Stu Ungar had the face of a young boy still at the age of 35. He and three friends went to Palm Springs to play some golf and they decided to eat at the best restaurant in town. He gave the Maitre D $100 and asked for a table for four and said he would be at the bar. He went to the bar and ordered a Rum and Coke but the bartender wanted I.D. He showed his I.D. but was still refused. So Stud pulled out two bundles of money around $20,000 and said “There. There is my I.D. Do you think any teenager would be carrying around that kind of money?” The bartender was ready to serve him now.

These two players were two of the best players of poker and because of the times they lived in, there are a lot more stories about them while poker was still young and wild.
