2009 World Series of Poker to feature a $40,000 No Limit Event

News By James White
Sunday, February 22, 2009

On May 28th, there will be a special $40,000 No Limit Hold’em event in the World Series of Poker for 2009. It is to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of the WSOP. This event will be the 2nd event of the series.

This event should attract all professional players and due to the cost may not include that many amateur players. Due to the notoriety of the event, this will be one that all pros will all hungry for. This may result in one of the best final tables of the year. This anniversary event is being advertised as a once only event but it is believed that there will be such publicity and demand for similar events in the future. Numerous other high stake poker events have become common. A while back, the Main Event was considered to be the “High Roller” event but no more. Nowadays, the $10,000 entry fee is not considered that much with the amount of players that now play poker. Events like the APT Macau had a $19,322 ($150,000 HKD) fee, Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure a $25,000 entry fee, the EPT London was $28,148 (£20,000), and the Aussie Millions a whopping $66,379 ($100,000 AUD) entry fee. Some players feel the Main Event should change its buy-in so the field is smaller and is filled with mostly professionals. Others feel the thrill that any average person can enter and win is an appeal that should not be extinguished. With the current economy, $10,000 is still a high entry fee.

The WSOP will be holding 57 bracelet events which are up two from 2008. Another big difference this year is the elimination of the rebuy tournaments from last year. The first event is the Casino employee event with a buy-in of $500. The buy-ins will range from $1,000 up to $10,000 and of course the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. tournament. There will be 10 $10,000 tournaments, two more than last year. The Main Event will be delayed until November 7th with the Main Event Champ crowned on the 10th.
