Legal Aspects When it comes to Online Poker
Article written by Lloyd B Hunt
The online poker industry has developed continuously starting with 1995, when the first virtual casino opened for players. There were no such expectations when online poker websites started their activity, as nowadays millions of people regularly visit these sites, whether they play real money poker or they play online poker just for fun. As the online poker industry is growing, laws and regulations referring to gambling are also improving, according to the needs. The worse problems are in the United States since the Federal Wire Act so most of the online poker websites are located outside US. This law is against the electronic transmissions of gambling sports, without mentioning that land based gambling is forbidden. There are some certain states that have rules which are only prohibiting online gambling. On the other hand, gambling is legal in the Caribbean Nations and in many countries from Europe. The United Kingdom is the most popular country when it comes to online poker in Europe, where you can find plenty of online casinos for you to choose from. In order to own a poker casino inside the United States you will need a permit; if you don’t have one, your business is illegal. However, the online poker websites are not allowed there. Sometimes players avoid playing online poker because they are afraid not to get into troubles. However, only the operators of such sites will have legal problems if they don’t have a license. The only risk for players is to lose the money they have deposited when playing on such a website that doesn’t have any permit. Another thing that players risk when playing on online poker sites that work illegally is to lose their personal information; hackers or the operators of the site can use those information. Many countries want to legalize online poker, but the governments are not that open to do that because this will help illegal operations to take place. Even if in some states online gambling is prohibited, the players are not penalized in any way. Online poker industry has developed a lot and the law should keep up with it.
