Online Poker Tips and Tricks

Article written by Rita Badger
Thursday, July 31, 2008

This article presents a few common-sense playing tricks for online poker that you should know if you’re interested in improving your game.

Tip #1: Know yourself and your game and your limits. You may think this is an obvious point, but you’d be surprised at the number of players who are unaware of both the weak and strong points of their game. This tip is at the top of the list of online poker tips for a very good reason. Even when you’re not in a game, you should be practicing and playing against your computer using a variety of scenarios and possible opponent skill levels so that you’re better prepared to handle whatever comes up in a live online poker hand. Don’t underestimate your opponents and don’t overestimate yourself. If you have to play at a lower level to learn a few tips and tricks for playing online poker, so be it.

Tip #2: Have a budget. As far as online poker playing tips, Tip #2 just as important as Tip #1. This is one of the key tips for playing online poker. Budgeting means a couple of things. First, don’t risk too much by playing high limits. Psychology figures in here: If the stakes are uncomfortably high, there’s a chance you’ll play less aggressively than you should. Conversely, if the stakes are low, there’s a chance you won’t be able to focus on the hand. Players who ignore the need to set a budget are ignoring one of the top playing tips for online poker.

Tip #3: Here’s another one of the top online poker tips and tricks: Bluff judiciously and study your opponents’ bluffs. Many players bluff too much and this makes them vulnerable. Try to identify these players and call their raises when you think you have a better hand. Also, be aware that many inexperienced players overuse the bluff. You can also semi-bluff when you have a strong draw, causing some opponents to fold, another of the many online poker tricks you should learn

Tip #4: Move if you have to. While not strictly one of the top tricks for playing online poker, it’s still a critical point. If you don’t like the game you’re in, there are plenty of others. There’s a lot of collusion in online poker and you may find yourself at a table with two or more co-conspirators who are determined to take your money. You have no reason to stay at such a table, since there are usually many tables to choose from on Internet poker sites.

Tip #5: Know when you’re beaten. Although a lot of players hate to admit it, there are times when they can get carried away emotionally. This makes you vulnerable to the online poker playing tricks of your opponents and is particularly true if you lose multiple hands. If it seems that your luck has run out, it probably has. Get out of the game, get off the poker site and do something else.
