Joker Poker - an exciting version of draw poker with a unique and interesting twist

Article written by Stewart Jim

Although the game of poker originated in Europe, it has found its true home in America. Played with 5 or 7 cards, poker has many popular variants. Although the game is usually played with a 52-card deck, it is possible to play with a 53-card deck that includes a joker. Joker poker is a version of 5-card draw. There are a couple of ways to play a joker poker game. In the first way, a joker can only be used as an ace or to complete a straight, flush or straight flush, and not as a true wild card, according to the rules of joker poker. Here’s an example: If a player holds 2 kings and, he cannot use the joker as a 3rd king. Another example of a joker poker hand would be if a player holds 4 hearts and a joker, the joker can be used as a heart to complete the flush. The second way to play joker poker uses the joker as a true wild card. For example, if a player holds 2-3-4-5 and a joker, the joker can be used as an ace or 6 to complete the straight.

To play 5-card draw joker poker, each player antes to the pot and receives a 5-card deal face down. According to joker poker rules, after the deal, there’s a round of betting. A player can bet, raise or fold when it’s his turn. Once the initial betting round is over, players can either discard or “stand pat,” i.e., elect not to discard. Players in a game of joker poker who choose to discard can trade in 1, 2, or 3 cards for new cards dealt from the deck. In some variations joker poker play, if a player has an ace, he can discard 4 cards, but is required to show the ace. Once the remaining players receive their cards, another round of betting occurs, after which players show their hands. The best hand wins the pot.

Note that when you play joker poker, it’s possible to have 5 of a kind in your hand. This is the highest-ranking hand in joker poker, beating even a straight flush. Also, when a joker is used to complete a flush, it is considered the highest-ranking card in the flush. When you play poker using a joker you’re in for a fast-paced and fun version of draw poker that generates lots of excitement for the player who holds a joker.
