Engaging in a poker tournament
Article written by Benny Brace
Engaging in a poker tournament can be a rather daunting affair, especially if it something you are typically used to, tournaments by their very nature will attract highly competent and seasoned players who will be able to weed out the competition swiftly and efficiently. This article is designed to provide some pointers so as to succeed in the site. It is crucial during a tournament to be able to change tempo, and attitude. At certain times, it will be best to play cautiously, especially when the pot odds are low, or the pot itself is rather weak, so use this to your advantage when deciding when to play tight and when to be more assertive in betting. One mistake, one wrong move, will cost you the entire tournament so it crucial that you are able to handle pressure.
A major failing on tournament players is that they are too accustomed to playing according to ring game rules, where the primary objective and focus is to earn as many chips as possible in total. In a tournament whilst the focus is on collecting chips and winnings there is also the added pressures of a time-limit as well as having to play a number of your bids blind. Playing a bid blind means you pay without being able to look at your cards. What this means is you don’t have as much time to strategise and ponder your next move, instead, you will have to make snap decisions and be more acutely aware of your opponents actions. You will also need to play more hands in order to accumulate sufficient chips. Remember to play tight at the very beginning of the tournament, use the value of the blinds to measure you degree of error, if the blinds are low, then let other players make the mistakes. Once the blind values increase, then you can step in and start to gamble in earnest.
